How to Enter Nepal: By Air and Road

Nepal is accessible to travelers through two main routes—by air and by road. While air travel is the most convenient and preferred option, road routes also provide multiple entry points for visitors arriving from neighboring countries.

By Air

The majority of international visitors—almost 90%—arrive in Nepal through Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) in Kathmandu, located just 8 km (5 miles) from the city center. Several international airlines operate direct flights to Nepal, connecting major cities worldwide.

Airlines Operating Flights to Nepal

Nepal is served by a range of international airlines, including:

  • Nepal Airlines (RNAC)
  • Thai Airways International
  • Qatar Airways
  • Singapore Airlines

Airport Tax

Passengers departing from Tribhuvan International Airport must pay an airport tax before their flight. It is advisable to check the latest tax rates and payment methods at the airport or with your airline.

By Road

For those traveling overland, Nepal has several entry points along its borders with India and China (Tibet). The most frequently used road crossings include:

  • Birganj (Central Nepal) – India-Nepal border
  • Belahia (Bhairahawa) – India-Nepal border
  • Kakarvitta (Eastern Nepal) – India-Nepal border
  • Kodari – Tibet (China)-Nepal border
